Organisations are under increasing pressure to demonstrate their contribution to society. Many businesses also recognise the value that responsible business activities bring back to their organisation, thereby mutually reinforcing the case for a strong social and environmental purpose. As a result of industry interest, we have witnessed the publication of a plethora of built environment-specific tools, frameworks, policy and thought leadership yet social value assessment continues to be complex and difficult to navigate.

This interactive half day course will cover all of the steps needed for a social value assessment, including:

1
Working with stakeholders
2
Measuring outcomes
3
Applying monetary values
4
Frameworks and tools available

Why attend

Gain the latest thinking on social value, and clear processes of how to generate and measure social value. The session will be compelling and interactive allowing you to think through the key touchpoints for a development to create broader positive impact on communities, whilst also learning from networking with your peers and experts and hearing about their experiences.

Who should attend?

This course will be most relevant to built environment professionals who are striving to maximise social value outcomes. We recommend delegates have a base level understanding of social value in the built environment before joining the course. See more on our learning levels here.

How to Assess Physical Risks in the Built Environment https://ukgbc.org/events/how-to-assess-physical-risk-in-the-built-environment/ Tue, 27 Jun 2023 13:48:13 +0000 https://ukgbc.org/?post_type=event&p=48403 Practical course supporting participants with the measuring and reporting of climate-related physical risks to built assets

The post How to Assess Physical Risks in the Built Environment appeared first on UKGBC.

]]>
Extreme weather events resulting from climate change are intensifying, posing significant challenges to the resilience of our built environment. To ensure that climate related risks are effectively considered and priced into financial and organisational governance decisions, physical hazard risk assessments can be utilised to understand the risks a built asset faces across its lifetime.

Assessing climate-related risks is becoming a legal requirement for asset owners. 1,300 of the largest UK-registered companies and financial institutions are required to disclose climate-related financial information on a mandatory basis, using guidelines from the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD). This requirement is likely to expand to include smaller organisations by 2025. Now is the time to develop the skills and knowledge to assess physical risk across your portfolio.

UKGBC’s Framework for Measuring and Reporting of Climate-related Physical Risks to Built Assets was written to support organisations to assess their risk, and report in line with TCFD recommendations.

Following the success of UKGBCs Physical Risks Lab, we’re now launching an open learning programme for our members and wider industry to develop the skills and knowledge needed to measure and report risk.

About the course

This practical course, spread across three months, invites delegates to use UKGBC’s Physical Risk Framework and Reporting Tool on one of their own assets. Following an introductory workshop, at which the key concepts with be introduced along with a detailed explanation of the framework and associated materials, delegates will use the assessment tools on a real asset within their portfolio. They’ll use the framework to work through the process of assessing physical risk, learning through practical application and with the support of UKGBC experts and peers on the course.

The course will involve a series of peer group check-ins to discuss the challenges they’re facing and find solutions and will wrap up with an online session for delegates to share their successes.

Upon completion, delegates will have a physical risk assessment for their chosen asset, and the knowledge and skills to assess the risks to other assets in their portfolio.

The course schedule:

Opening workshop

19th September, 10:00 – 13:00 (London, in person)

Peer group check-in 1

12 October, time TBC (online)

Peer group check-in 2

16 November, time TBC (online)

Report out

12 December, 10:00 – 12:00 (online)

Why join the course?

1
Learn how to use UKGBC’s physical risk assessment framework and assessment tool.
2
Assess the climate-related physical risks of one of your assets, and prepare for reporting.
3

Organisations are under increasing pressure to demonstrate their contribution to society. Many businesses also recognise the value that responsible business activities bring back to their organisation, thereby mutually reinforcing the case for a strong social and environmental purpose.

The Public Services (Social Value) Act 2012 Act has helped to bring the broader social value agenda to the fore. It has encouraged public sector procurement teams to look beyond financial metrics and measurements within bids and tendering activities, much of this being driven by enlightened local authorities. This shift in focus is changing expectations, creating a market where suppliers are increasingly expecting to demonstrate social value.

Overview

Join us for a half day course to discuss how the built environment industry can understand, measure, and communicate its social value. The course will cover all of the steps needed for a social value assessment, including working with stakeholders, measuring outcomes, and applying monetary values. It will explore the different frameworks and tools that are available, including UKGBC’s Framework for Defining Social Value. The course will be interactive, with a range of examples, discussions, and exercises.

Measuring social value has become a vital part of communicating and committing to the creation of social value across the development lifecycle. During this session, participants will explore what measuring social value currently looks like for the sector. Taking insights from UKGBC’s recently published guide; Delivering Social Value – Measurement, participants will gain an understanding on when it is useful to measure social value across the lifecycle of a development, the common measurement approaches, and the principles that UKGBC have set out for measuring the social value of buildings and places. They will then have the chance to put knowledge into practice, with the delivery partner Envoy Partnership leading them through a worked example of measuring social value on a sample project.

Speakers

 • Sophia Cox, Sustainability Advisor, UKGBC
 • Oliver Kempton, Partner, Envoy Partnership

Who should attend

Anyone interested in measuring the social value of the built environment.

Why attend

Social value has rightly become one of the cornerstones of responsible business within the built environment industry, and over the past few years, we have been delighted to see an increasing number of businesses measuring the benefits that they are bringing to their local communities.

Yet the options for measuring social value is a complex and sometimes baffling landscape for the industry to navigate. This session is designed to help you cut through the noise around social value measurement and try out simple techniques that you can use on your own work.

The post Level 3 Biodiversity Net Gain Masterclass appeared first on UKGBC.

]]>
Biodiversity net gain is an approach to development that leaves biodiversity in a better state than before. With biodiversity net gain soon becoming a mandatory element of the English planning system in the new Environment Bill, developers will need to prepare to adapt future designs to increase natural space on their development projects. The benefits of improved biodiversity in placemaking also extend beyond compliance.

The IPBES Global Assessment 2019 revealed that land use change has had the largest relative impact on terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems. It stated that:

“management decisions that take evolutionary changes into account will be noticeably more effective”.

Research by the University of Manchester suggests that:

increasing tree cover across an urban area by 10% can reduce surface water runoff by almost 6%  and reduce surface and air temperatures by 12°C and 4°C respectively.

Through applying biodiversity net gain it is hoped that habitats and ecosystem services lost through development can be restored.

This course offers the opportunity to hear from leading experts in the field on how biodiversity net gain can be created in the design and construction stages of new developments, and how to avoid the common pitfalls and utilise best practice. It will provide an overview of the current policy landscape and the metrics surrounding biodiversity net gain. Participants will have the opportunity to work through an implementation scenario, learning insights from the experts and networking with peers. We will also encourage drafting a work plan to help focus what actions participants will take once back in their role and recommend a follow up 2-3 months after the course to see how the actions are developing.

Key objectives:

 • Understand the current UK policy requirements for achieving a biodiversity net gain
 • Learn how to present the business case and develop corporate strategies on biodiversity net gain
 • Explore best practice case studies and gain key insights and lessons learned from the experts
 • Understand how to implement a biodiversity net gain in design and construction through a scenario exercise

Speakers:

 • Tom Butterworth, Technical Director for Biodiversity, WSP
 • Laura Homfray, Consultant Biodiversity and Natural Capital, WSP
 • Nick White, Principal Advisor, Natural England

Who should attend:

The course is ideal for sustainable built environment professionals involved in the design and delivery of buildings, particularly those who have a good understanding of the fundamentals around biodiversity net gain and would like to learn how to apply the Defra Biodiversity Net Gain process to a project. Although the course is open to anyone it will be particularly interesting to sustainability professionals, ecologists, architects and project managers.

All those who have or will sign up will receive an email confirming the new details and access link. If you have any questions, please contact events@UKGBC.org

————————————————————————————————————————————–

Overview

Learn about applying circular economy principles in built environment projects and adapting business models to become more circular. Hear about the practical steps you can take to apply this concept to projects and business operations and gather examples of how this has been applied in reality and the lessons learned.

What to expect

A transition to a more circular built environment will require both pioneering projects and systemic change. At project level, implementing circular principles can help meet policy requirements, maximise resource efficiency, reduce carbon and create healthier and more sustainable places. From a business perspective, changing your business model and offer to be more circular represents a huge opportunity for engaging new markets, generating new revenue streams and making greater efficiencies.

This masterclass will consist of two sessions: 1) applying circular economy principles in built environment projects and 2) embedding circular thinking in business models. Participants will be introduced to opportunities to be more circular in their built projects, including some of the ‘easy wins’ and lessons learned from projects. They will then be taken through the first steps in leveraging this concept in their business operations and hear how it has been applied to a business. Delegates will have the chance to discuss strategies and challenges with the speakers and wider group through group exercises.
