The need for rapid decarbonisation is clear. The impacts of climate change are being felt here and now, with average global temperature records being broken across the summer. We need to accelerate action to mitigate our impacts on our planet. But we’re not moving fast enough. The Whole Life Carbon Roadmap indicates that continuing business as usual would see the sector fall well short of the 2050 net zero target.

Organisations across the built environment value chain need to play their part in reaching net zero, and each and every person in those organisations can support the transformation.

That means you!

‘Net zero’ can appear confusing, complicated, and highly challenging to achieve, but UKGBC are here to help you understand what this means, why it’s important and what actions you can take.

Renewable Energy Procurement (Version 2) Launch Event https://ukgbc.org/events/renewable-energy-procurement-version-2-launch-event/ Wed, 19 Jul 2023 13:47:09 +0000 https://ukgbc.org/?post_type=event&p=48839 Webinar launching UKGBC’s new guidance on renewable energy procurement, giving stakeholders the tools they need to make informed procurement decisions which support a resilient, zero carbon grid.

The post Renewable Energy Procurement (Version 2) Launch Event appeared first on UKGBC.

]]>
As recently highlighted by the Climate Change Committee (CCC), having a reliable, resilient and decarbonised electricity system by 2035 is a central requirement for achieving net zero carbon in the UK. It is also vital for enabling the transition to a fully electric heat and transport system. To achieve this 2035 target, the CCC outlines the importance of flexible, low carbon solutions to ensure that a renewable-led power system is prepared for an increasingly electrified economy, as well as being resilient to potential future extreme weather.

In support of our 2035 target, the built environment has a significant role to play. Over the next decade, our industry must deploy large amounts of building-level renewables, such as solar PVs, and become increasingly flexible, with buildings able to actively manage their energy demand to respond to the availability of zero carbon electricity on the grid. How our industry procures electricity from the market also has a critical part to play by sending demand signals for the renewables, storage, and other supporting technologies that will enable a resilient, net zero carbon electricity system.

This webinar will introduce the guidance which provides an update to UKGBC’s report on Renewable Energy Procurement and Carbon Offsetting, published in 2021, and provides stakeholders with the tools to make informed procurement decisions which help accelerate the transition to a resilient, zero carbon grid.

The overall aim of the guidance update is to empower stakeholders procuring energy in the built environment to do so in a way that enables them to realise their climate ambitions at the asset-level while supporting the continued decarbonisation of the electricity supply sector.

This guidance will

1
Demonstrate the role the built environment has to play in supporting the decarbonisation of the electricity system
2
Update the three principles for quality renewable electricity procurement
3
Identify actions stakeholders can take to respond to the three principles
4
Give an overview of the procurement options available in the market
5
Provide tools to engage energy suppliers and source the information needed to compare the procurement options available
6
Define a methodology for assessing a building or organisation’s overall electricity strategy, including procurement, onsite generation and energy flexibility

This webinar will

1
Launch UKGBC’s new guidance and findings
2
Outline the steps needed to align energy procurement to climate goals and decarbonisation pathways
3
Explore the tools available to support a resilient, decarbonised grid

One of the final components of UKGBC Net Zero Carbon Buildings Framework is the responsible offsetting of residual emissions. Residual emissions are emissions that cannot be reduced or eliminated through energy efficiency measures, renewable energy, or other low-carbon technologies. These emissions are often unavoidable, and in such cases, responsible offsetting can be an effective way to achieve net zero.

Although substantial strides have been taken to decarbonise the built environment sector, it is crucial that the industry continues to persevere in reducing operational and embodied carbon emissions by almost 90% by 2050. The residual emissions that remain must be offset responsibly and play an integral role in the transition towards achieving a net-zero sector.

The current lack of clarity and transparency in the carbon market has increased exposure to greenwashing accusations and is associated with detrimental impacts to climate action. For our carbon market to succeed, and for the planet to benefit from the responsible use of carbon offsets, it is vital that industry has access to clear guidance, alongside an effective global governance system.
The purpose of this new report is to offer guidance on carbon offsetting, with the aim of enabling the built environment sector to transition to more dramatic commitments as we approach 2030.

UKGBC has launched a second series of Collaboration Café events upon member requests to continue hosting opportunities for open knowledge sharing and collaboration. This time the Cafes will focus on climate Resilience within the industry, as part of the bigger goals of our Climate Resilience and Nature Programme, convening built environment organisations in person and bi-monthly to share insights about the practicalities, implications, and challenges of creating climate resilient business and built environment.

This Collaboration Cafés series will bring together groups of UKGBC members across our Local Area Networks, with the view to hear from the wider geographical scope of members within the UK, while convening a diverse multidisciplinary group.

Collaboration Cafés will be held bi-monthly and are open to UKGBC’s members only. For more information on becoming a UKGBC member, please see this page.

Upcoming Collaboration Cafés:

What is a Collaboration Café?

Collaboration Cafés will follow the World Café Method , a global movement creating collaborative dialogue around questions that matter. They offer an informal and uncompetitive space for UKGBC members to share insights, synthesise lessons and tackle shared challenges they face at the organisational level.

See how previous Collaboration Cafes looked like in this UKGBC post.

Who should attend?

This event is for UKGBC members based in respective regions only – up to two attendees are invited to register per organisation, with places limited on a ‘first come, first served’ basis. If you are not a member within the region, UKGBC reserves the right to politely decline your registration. All levels of knowledge and experience on the topic of resilience are welcome to attend.

If you have doubts with regards to the best café to attend, contact events@ukgbc.org.

Why are we focusing on Resilience for the built environment?

The climatic and environmental crises are the largest and interlinked threat to modern human existence, caused by our activities and actions. The impact inflicted is resulting in widespread and rapid and extreme weather events and global climatic changes in every region across the globe. For the built environment, this will have a consequential impact on our buildings, infrastructure, environment and way of life.

Climate action failure, extreme weather events and biodiversity loss rank as the three most potentially severe risks for humankind for the next decade. It is of the essence that built environment organisations take a proactive approach towards creating a resilient world, tapping into the leading role already demonstrated to support the climatic crises.

Therefore, we are calling all our members to support our ambition that “by 2030, all buildings and infrastructure will, throughout their lifetime, be climate-resilient and maximise environmental net gains, through the prioritisation of Nature-based Solutions”, and join us to this collaborative discussion and swift action.

How do the Collaboration Cafes fit in the bigger picture within the industry?

The actions needed to build a resilient world start by raising awareness and knowledge on this aspect among organisations and individuals within the built environment. Sharing knowledge and tapping into the large diversity of experiences and expertise will ultimately enable finding the required collaborative solutions and interlinked pathways to establish the best next steps. The Collaboration Cafes will support just that, besides collaboratively finding the best descriptions to how resilience looks like for the built environment, it will facilitate raising awareness, sharing knowledge, and open the door to possibilities.

Moreover, this series of Collaboration Café on Resilience is part of the principal piece of research and engagement work that falls within UKGBC’s Climate Resilience and Nature Programme. We will use the learnings from the Collaboration Cafes as the baseline of knowledge, interest, challenges and gaps to progress the industry’s work. The learnings and insights collected from the Collaboration Cafes will be used to shape key content for UKGBC’s upcoming Resilience Roadmap project.

More about the Resilience Roadmap:

This project aims to ramp up climate adaptation action in the UK built environment by developing science-driven, industry-wide targets for climate resilience, alongside key policies for Government and actions for built environment stakeholders. More details on this project to come.

]]>

The message from COP27 is that we are fast running out of time… But [OUR MEMBERS] are calling for national government leadership to make the exceptional normal.”

Julie Hirigoyen, UKGBC

Buildings are the UK’s second largest source of climate emissions after surface transport. With time running out to keep global temperatures to 1.5 degrees, a laser-like focus on the policies needed to decarbonise this sector is essential.

This scorecard on the Government’s policies assesses progress over the past year since the Heat and Buildings Strategy was launched in October 2021 and shines a light on the big opportunities the Government must grasp in order to cut emissions and boost the green economy in the year ahead.

It compares the policies that have been announced or are in delivery against the comprehensive set of policy recommendations made in the UKGBC’s Net Zero Whole Life Carbon Roadmap for the Built environment, which enjoys broad industry support. In each of the key areas – operational carbon, embodied carbon and infrastructure, we have assessed the significance of the policy area, the policy gaps and the size of the economic prize if Government takes action this year. We have colour coded progress in each area using a red-amber-green criteria.

Key Takeaways

1

Most of the Government’s proposals or plans for an area are not in line with our recommendations or the needs of a net zero carbon built environment for the UK

2

Cutting energy waste from homes is one of the biggest opportunities the Government has this year to simultaneously tackle the cost-of-living crisis, energy security, inflation and levelling up.

3

Policy on decarbonising non-domestic buildings appears to be frozen, with little to no progress.

4

Few homes and buildings built today are net-zero and adapted to our changing climate – this must change.

5

Embodied Carbon is a huge gap in government policy and continued delay increases the costs of net zero.
