Our approach to addressing the climate emergency is failing. We need a radical transformation of the systems we operate within to achieve a net zero, climate resilient and regenerative built environment. We need to challenge our assumptions and business as usual way of working to enable a dramatic paradigm shift that reconciles humans and the rest of nature.

Following our kick off webinar on 27th September, we are hosting the next part of this systems change journey in October. This will be a 2 day Systems Change conference, where we convene all interested in this work to bring in their questions, perspectives and, crucially, help shape the programme. On day one, we will explore the biggest systemic issues, root causes and key barriers as well as get inspired about the opportunities ahead. The following day, day two – will be for those who specifically would like to be involved in the sub working groups to explore the challenges and insights on the key themes identified in day one.

What will be the key aims for the October conference?

1
To unpack and build consensus around the urgent action and transformational change needed
2
To build personal and collective systems change understanding and capabilities
3
Develop understanding of the levers of change and inspire and engage by facilitating conversations and learning across the value chain
4
Get started with the core work (approx. 80 participants to collaborate across the value chain and define further work and look ahead)

Why get involved?

If you are passionate about systems change, sustainability, or just want to know more about what is coming in the future, this journey could be of interest to you. It is particularly of interest for change makers and leaders who are trying to make change within their organizations, or wider across client groups, supply chain or sub tier contractors.

Join this inspirational, experiential learning journey to dig deeper on working through our big challenges, in a collaborative way with others.

Who should get involved?

This process aims to bring together a diverse group from across the value chain at all levels. We welcome involvement from anyone interested in making change happen and contributing to this new, radical programme of work. Get in touch.

Sign up for our kick-off event on 27th September in London where we will formally launch the programme and introduce our partners, aims and timelines.

UKGBC have committed significant resources to what we believe will be a powerful, transformational programme. We are seeking a true representation of the industry, from the big players to sole traders and everyone in between. To do this we are asking for donations only. A suggested donation would range from £150+ for large organisations, £80 for SMEs and £10 for sole traders. We are a charity and need to recoup some costs but do not want the ticket price to be a barrier to joining. Please share this event with your network. Members and non-members welcome.

What is systems change?

Systems change refers to the process of making significant and lasting transformations to how a system operates, with the aim of addressing complex problems and achieving positive outcomes without unintended consequences. It involves shifting the fundamental structures, rules, and relationships within a system to create long-term and sustainable solutions. Instead of merely treating the symptoms or individual components, systems change focuses on understanding and addressing the root causes of a problem and involves transformational – not incremental – change.

What is the built environment’s role?

Progress has been made in our sector, but to put it simply, it is not enough. The scale and pace of change is inadequate. The majority of industry continues to operate in the compliance or ‘meeting regulation’ mindset. UKGBC seeks to enact change in the culture and mindsets to move away from business as usual and empower stakeholders to be take collective action in this transformation.

What will this programme explore?

This programme will be fluid and open to participants to bring in their unique insights and perspectives on different elements of the system, and key topics.

Areas of conversation may cover what we see as the biggest systemic issues, for example dependencies on economic growth, inadequacy of policy and regulations, our relationship with the rest of nature, rapid decarbonisation, regenerative design or climate justice.

Following the September kick off event, programme participants will work in sub-groups to explore the  challenges and insights on key themes and discuss possible interventions. The outcome of this work is open to the opportunities that arise across the course of the programme.

Why UKGBC?

With our unique positioning as a network of 700+ organisations from across the built environment value chain, we are leveraging our power as an industry convenor to facilitate the radical collaboration that is needed to enact widescale, transformative change.

Please note, the application deadline has been to Friday 9th June.

Celebrating 10 Years of Future Leaders

This summer we are running a special edition of Future Leaders to mark the tenth anniversary of the programme. The programme will run across multiple sites in Birmingham and London.

The focus of the programme will be on taking ideas from the last 10 years of the programme and developing them into actionable business plans. Participants will gain skills in insight gathering, prototyping and experimentation as well as business model design.

What is Future Leaders?

The renowned five-month Future Leaders programme is designed for forward-thinking professionals with 5-10 years’ experience in the built environment industry. Through a mix of online and in person workshops, retreats and showcase events, participants work in teams to develop the skills and personal confidence to drive transformational change in their organisation. This transformation will not come about by business as usual, but through a radical and fundamental shift, in which sustainability and innovative thinking are strategic drivers.

Participants will benefit from a range of expert inputs and high profile keynote speakers, and will work to develop an innovation idea on key built environment sustainability challenges which are developed through the programme.

The Future Leaders 2023 Summer programme includes 3 key touchpoints:

Part 1: Explore and initiate

5th July: Kick-off Workshop (Online)

18th – 20th July: 3 day Innovation and Leadership Workshop (Birmingham)

Sustainability and radical transformation

Part 2Develop and refine

12th – 13th September: 2 day Nature Retreat (Venue TBC)

Personal leadership

Part 3: Action

29th November: 1 day Showcase (London or Birmingham)

Innovation pitches

There are also four additional online touchpoints and 1:1 coaching offered throughout the programme.

Who should apply?

Future Leaders are drawn from a range of backgrounds from the built environment sector, and are selected based on an enthusiasm to learn, an openness to new ways of thinking, and a desire to challenge the status quo. It is not a prerequisite to have sustainability in the job title – in fact the diversity of perspectives is crucial to the programme’s success.

As with our other leadership programmes, applications for Future Leaders are highly competitive, and we accept a maximum of two applicants from each organisation.

UKGBC offers up to five bursary places each year to an individual from either a not-for-profit organisation, SME, or local authority. In order to be considered for this place, your organisation must be a UKGBC member. Please contact leaders@ukgbc.org for more information.

If you have any further questions, please contact leaders@ukgbc.org

The Future Leaders 2022 Programme was fantastic. It gave me the chance to connect with some truly inspirational people. I’ve learnt so much about sustainability, innovation and myself. It had a great mix of formats, including; individual learning, coaching, team work, external speakers, pitching, creating. I would recommend the Future Leaders programme to those wanting to make a lasting and sustainable impact on our built environment and to themselves
Emma Sueref Vistry Group
Brilliant programme to get a variety of perspectives about the carbon challenge in the built environment. Took me out of my siloed contractor thinking, and I saw the challenges that consultants and developers also face. This has helped me shape my thinking to solve the carbon challenge to help address all issues that impact not only contractors, but consultants and developers too. I now also have a network of people from a variety of backgrounds who are passionate about the climate challenge, who I can test my thinking with and get advice from.
Emma Gilchrist Laing O’Rourke
I joined the course somewhat unknowing. I didn’t know what to expect, how things would go or if I would really get anything from it. I left feeling immensely proud of the journey we all went on together and the outcomes we reached as teams and individuals. The experience was truly 10/10, I couldn’t recommend the course more. I thought creativity and innovation weren’t skills I possessed, how wrong I was. We are all creative and we are all innovators and we were supported to understand this for ourselves throughout. The course is truly unique and enabled me to develop much more than leadership skills. It has set the foundations I needed to make some next steps on my journey within the built environment sector. Thanks team!

“I have felt incredibly inspired and motivated during the Future Leaders course. It has raised my awareness of sustainability and leadership in the construction industry, what the struggles are, and what the unmet needs are. I am gaining an understanding of how I can help as an architect, identifying the barriers to implementing Net Zero designs, and how to advance decisions in the right direction. I’ve loved the format and the speakers; it has exceeded my expectations.” Andra Antone, Ryder Architecture

UKGBC’s Future Leader programme was a fantastic experience that allowed me to develop skills, connect with colleagues from across industry and most importantly, make some fantastic new friends! The course provides the participants with a supportive environment in which you are encouraged and guided in developing new skills and innovative ways to tackle challenges, as well as nurturing personal development activities. Working as part of a team to develop our innovation idea was a brilliant and truly collaborative journey, listening to and learning from other people’s perspective, trialing ideas together and ultimately delivering an engaging final product. I’d encourage anyone interested to join the course and enjoy the journey! – Matt Black, World GBC

“The Future Leaders 2020 programme has far exceeded any expectations. From working with a like-minded, supportive cohort of other Future Leaders to listening to a range of engaging speakers and industry professionals, has provided me with the vital skills of confidently and effectively communicating ideas – no matter how abstract! I would recommend the Future Leaders programme to those wanting to make a lasting and sustainable impact to our built environment.” – Matt Lindsay, Biotecture

Applications are now open for the 2021 Change Accelerator cohort. See below for details, prospectus and application form.

The Change Accelerator is a three-month programme is aimed at middle to senior level business leaders (+15 years’ experience) working in the built environment with real influence over business strategy, and with a remit for change.

This year, it runs from September to November 2021 and aims overall to facilitate a systemic shift in the sustainability of the built environment. The Change Accelerator objectives are to:

  2. Redefine own leadership purpose, understand how to influence systems and hone storytelling techniques to maximize influence and deliver transformational change at organisational level.

The programme consists of the following key components:
